Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Howard came up with 36 saves and Teemu Pulkkinen recorded the deciding goal midway through the third period, as Detroit claimed a 5-2 decision over Edmonton at Joe Louis Arena.
Niklas Kronwall, Riley Sheahan, Justin Abdelkader and Pavel Datsyuk also tallied for the Red Wings, who put an end to a two-game slide and won for the fourth time in six games.
"It took us a while to get going. We had our goaltender give up the first one and I thought he played real well after that," said Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock. "Anytime you start and give up an ugly goal and you're on your heels, it takes you while to get going."
Rob Klinkhammer and Nail Yakupov scored for the Oilers, who have dropped five in a row. Ben Scrivens allowed three goals on 24 shots in defeat.
Pulkkinen pumped one home to give Detroit a 3-1 edge at 10:40 of the third period, but Yakupov trimmed that deficit on a blast from the right circle on a power play with 1:55 remaining.
Scrivens was called to the bench for an extra skater seconds later and Abdelkader clinched the contest on a shot into the vacant cage with 64 seconds to play.
Edmonton again went for an extra attacker and Datsyuk then scored on a shot released from along his own goal line, banking the puck off the left post and in with 17.1 on the clock.
"I thought we came out strong in the first and then got away from our game plan in the second," Klinkhammer said. "And they kind of took over and we were solid in the third."
Klinkhammer's push at a right circle shot from Matt Hendricks slipped through Howard just 2:15 after the opening faceoff.
Kronwall evened the score on a carry-over power play just 21 seconds into the second and the Wings went up by a goal inside of six minutes left as Sheahan tapped in a Gustav Nyquist feed.
Evgeny Romasko made his NHL debut tonight as the league's first Russian-born referee ... Kronwall's goal was his 333rd career point, moving him into 8th place among Swedish-born defensemen, passing Ulf Samuelsson ... Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg recorded three assists.
