Lincoln, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Melo Trimble scored 21 points, Dez Wells posted a double-double and No. 10 Maryland edged Nebraska 64-61 on Sunday.
Wells had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Terrapins (26-5, 14-4 Big Ten), who concluded the regular season on a seven-game winning streak.
"Tonight's game did not have a lot of flow to it. We were in serious foul trouble and survived the first half without Melo and a lot of guys stepped up and played well for us," said Maryland coach Mark Turgeon.
Shavon Shields paced Nebraska (13-17, 5-13) with 26 points but missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer ahead of the final buzzer. Terran Petteway had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the Cornhuskers' eighth straight loss.
"We gave ourselves a chance, we just didn't execute enough to win," said Nebraska coach Tim Miles.
Shields made a strong move into the lane and was fouled on a jumper. He hit the free throw to complete the three-point play and pull Nebraska within 62-61 with 42.9 seconds left.
Maryland then let the shot clock run down before calling a timeout. Following the break, Wells nailed a contested jumper from the right wing with 8.9 seconds remaining.
A Petteway dunk gave Nebraska an early 13-7 lead, but Maryland responded with a 10-4 run to tie it.
Down two at halftime, the Cornhuskers opened the second half on a 9-1 run and went up 38-32 on a Walter Pitchford 3-pointer. The Terps eventually surged ahead and grabbed a 59-53 lead on a Wells layup with 4:11 left.
Game Notes
The 26 wins equal the most Turgeon has compiled in a season during his 17- year head coaching career. His 2005-06 Wichita State team went 26-9 and reached the Sweet 16 ... Nebraska was limited to 30.5 percent shooting and finished 2-of-14 from 3-point range.
