Thomas, Celtics beat Davis, Pelicans

New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Isaiah Thomas scored 27 points in under 29 minutes off the bench and the Boston Celtics beat Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans 104-98 on Friday night.

Davis had 29 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, but the Hornets never led over the last 16 1/2 minutes, failing in their attempt to tie idle Oklahoma City for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Brandon Bass had 17 points, Evan Turner scored 16 and Jae Crowder added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who have won two in a row and five of their last seven games.

"The guys did a great job of doing what we wanted to do throughout the night," said Celtics coach Brad Stevens."

Davis returned from a five-game absence because of a shoulder sprain to get 39 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks in an 88-85 win over Detroit on Wednesday -- New Orleans' sixth victory in seven games. He was 11-of-21 from the field in this one and Eric Gordon added 20 points.

"We have a long way to go," said Tyreke Evans. "But we definitely wanted to win this game."

Thomas scored 14 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter to help Boston pull away after taking a 71-68 lead into the frame.

He opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, sparking an 11-3 flurry that gave the Celtics a double-digit lead. It dipped into single digits only once before the final minute, when a Pelicans push got them only as close as the final margin on a Gordon 3 at the buzzer.

Earlier, Davis collected 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block in the first quarter and the Pelicans led by six twice early on, but ended the quarter in a 27-25 hole.

The Celtics had an 11-point lead 4 1/2 minutes into the second quarter but New Orleans scored 18 of the next 24 points for a one-point edge. The score was tied 47-47 going into the break.

Game Notes

Boston beat New Orleans 108-100 at home on Jan. 12 to snap a five-game losing streak in the series ... The Pelicans finish a three-game homestand on Saturday against Southwest Division-leading Memphis ... The Celtics began a three-game road trip that continues Sunday in Orlando.
