East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Giants released veteran defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old Kiwanuka had spent his entire nine-year NFL career with the Giants and was part of two Super Bowl championships. The move saves the Giants $4.825 million against the salary cap.

Kiwanuka started each of the first 11 games at left defensive end last season, but he suffered a knee injury against Dallas on Nov. 23 and was placed on injured reserve. He ended with 28 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks.

The Boston College product was the 32nd overall selection in the 2006 NFL Draft. He played in 120 games with 82 starts -- 52 at defensive end, 29 at strongside linebacker and one at weakside linebacker. Kiwanuka recorded 464 tackles, 38 1/2 sacks and three interceptions.

Kiwanuka also played in six postseason games with three starts. He was a member of the Giants' Super Bowl XLII and XLVI championship teams.
