Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Second seed Irina-Camelia Begu eased into the quarterfinals, while fourth-seeded American Madison Brengle came up a loser Wednesday at the Rio Open tennis event.

The Romanian Begu, a doubles champion here last year, handled American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-2, 6-4, while German Dinah Pfizenmaier upended Brengle in 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 fashion on the red clay at Jockey Club Brasileiro.

Begu's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be Israeli Julia Glushko.

Two other second-round results saw fifth-seeded Swede Johanna Larsson top Brazilian wild card Gabriela Ce 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and Glushko dismiss American Grace Min 6-3, 6-1. Larsson will meet Pfizenmaier in the quarters.

The first round concluded with three more matches, as sixth-seeded Slovak Anna Schmiedlova doused Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck 6-3, 6-0 and seventh-seeded Slovenian Polona Hercog beat Belgium's An-Sophie Mestach 6-3, 6-4.

Some more second-round play on Thursday will see top-seeded former French Open runner-up Sara Errani take on Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino and third-seeded Roberta Vinci battle Paraguayan qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg.

This week's champion will claim $43,000.
