Kings put current surge to the test against Lightning

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings look to extend their longest winning streak since October on Monday night as they take on the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning for the second time in just over a week.

The Kings have ripped off four straight victories to post their longest winning streak since a season-high six-game run from Oct. 12-26. That has pulled the defending Stanley Cup champions to within three points of both third place in the Pacific Division and the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.

This current winning streak began with a 4-2 victory over the hosting Lightning on Feb. 7, with Justin Williams scoring twice, Robyn Regehr notching two assists and Jonathan Quick coming up with 26 saves.

Los Angeles has won five of its past six versus Tampa Bay overall.

Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov tallied for the Lightning, who had a franchise-record 10-game home winning streak ended with that loss. Ben Bishop allowed three goals on nine shots in the first period and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 19 saves in relief as he faced the Kings for the first time.

Quick is 4-1-0 with a 1.34 goals against average, .949 save percentage and one shutout in six games (5 starts) lifetime versus the Lightning. He figures to start tonight after helping lead the Kings to a 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday with 27 saves.

Trevor Lewis had the eventual winning goal 17 seconds into the third period as he was hit in stride with a pass from Marian Gaborik in the slot.

"I didn't even have to say anything to Gabi. He knew I was there and made a great play just sliding it over to me," said Lewis. "Luckily I had the goalie going the other way. It was a great play by Gabi."

Jarret Stoll also scored in the third period and Dwight King had a goal earlier in the contest.

The Lightning are in action for a second straight night, having opened a five- game road trip with Sunday's 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Bishop made 33 saves.

Steven Stamkos and Ryan Callahan each tallied a goal and an assist and Cedric Paquette, Alex Killorn and Ondrej Palat also scored for the Lightning, who ended a two-game skid with their first win in San Jose since March 24, 2003.

"It was not a pretty road win, but something we can be proud of," Stamkos said.

Forward Valtteri Filppula supplied two assists as the Lightning pulled into a tie with Montreal for first place in the Atlantic Division. Both clubs have 76 points, but Tampa Bay has played three more games.
