New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The National Football League has hired its first chief medical advisor, naming Dr. Elizabeth G. Nabel to the position.
Dr. Nabel will work directly with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, providing strategic input to the league's medical, health and scientific efforts. She will also serve on each of the NFL's medical committees and will help the league identify areas to enhance player safety, care and treatment.
"We are excited to have Dr. Nabel's insight as we continually seek ways to make our game better and safer," said Goodell in a statement Monday. "The game is safer than it has ever been, but not as safe as it will be with advisors like Dr. Nabel providing expertise."
Dr. Nabel will continue to serve as president of Brigham and Women's Hospital and as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. A cardiologist and distinguished biomedical researcher, she formerly served as Director of the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
