Boca Raton, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Goydos fired a 6-under 66 on Friday and he grabbed a share of the lead after the opening round of the Allianz Championship.
Goydos was joined atop the leaderboard by Bart Bryant and Tom Pernice, Jr. Goydos and Bryant both have one Champions Tour victory, while Pernice won twice last year to raise his tour win total to four.
Bernhard Langer, the 2010 champion, opened with a 67 on The Old Course at Broken Sound Club. He stands alongside Fred Funk and Tom Byrum in fourth place at minus-5.
Brad Bryant, who tied for second at this event in 2008, headlines a group of six players tied for seventh at 4-under 68. He was joined there by Mark Brooks, Loren Roberts, Grant Waite, Peter Jacobsen and Roger Chapman.
Defending champion Michael Allen made eagle on the par-5 18th to post 2-under 70. He is tied for 19th.
Goydos wrapped birdies at the first and third around a bogey on the second. He came back with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7 to move to 3-under.
Last year's Pacific Links Hawaii Championship winner ran off three pars in a row from the eighth. Goydos dropped in back-to-back birdie chances on the 11th and 12th. After five more pars, Goydos birdied the par-5 18th to gain a share of the lead.
Bryant started his round with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 10th. He also birdied the 12th before making five pars in a row from the 13th.
The 2013 Dick's Sporting Goods Open champion stuck his second shot at the par-5 18th within four feet and he drained that putt for eagle.
Around the turn, he birdied the second and fourth to move to 6-under. Bryant capped his round with five consecutive pars.
"It was tricky today. I don't remember the wind coming from this direction before. It was a little tougher day," Bryant stated. "I had a lot of 10- footers today and a lot of good looks at birdie."
Pernice played the back nine first and he birdied the 12th and 13th, both from inside 10 feet. He followed a birdie on No. 18 with a 10-foot birdie putt at the first.
The four-time Champions Tour winner chipped in for birdie on the par-3 third and rolled in another 10-footer for birdie on No. 4.
Pernice moved into the lead at 8-under with birdies at six and seven. After a par on the eighth, he found water off the tee at No. 9. That poor drive led to a closing double-bogey, which dropped him into a tie for the lead.
"It started with control of the ball on this breezy day. The greens were receptive if you hit good shots," Pernice said. "I didn't hit a good tee shot on the last hole."
NOTES: Pernice also shared the first-round lead here in 2013, when he went on to tie for second ... Allen's streak of 195 consecutive holes without a 3-putt ended on No. 11 ... Nolan Henke struggled to a 5-over 77 in his tour debut.
