(SportsNetwork.com) - The James Borrego era begins for the Orlando Magic on Friday night when he makes his head coaching debut against the Los Angeles Lakers at Amway Center.
The Magic relieved head coach Jacque Vaughn of his duties on Thursday. He guided the team for two-plus seasons, but, at 15-37, the Magic have been a disappointment.
"We weren't going to sit back and allow this to continue to happen throughout the course of the rest of the season without having an opportunity to turn it around and improve again," said Magic CEO Alex Martins. "We've said it internally that this is just a short bump in the road and this can easily get back on track because we believe we have a great deal of talent on the roster."
Orlando has lost 10 straight and hasn't won since Jan. 14 at home against the Houston Rockets. The Magic have dropped five in a row as the host and allowed 100-plus points in 14 consecutive games.
On Wednesday, the Magic fell to the San Antonio Spurs, 110-103, in Alamo City.
Nikola Vucevic had 25 points with 13 rebounds and Tobias Harris chipped in 23 points and 10 boards for the Magic. Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton both had 14 and Evan Fournier chipped in 10.
"Overall we gave a great effort out there tonight," Harris said. "Everybody was locked in. (We) had a lot of energy."
The Magic shot 50 percent from the floor, but allowed the Spurs to shoot 52.4 percent.
The Lakers have lost two straight and 11 of their last 12. LA owns an eight- game road losing streak and will close its road trip on Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
On Wednesday, the Lakers were game, but fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in overtime, 113-105.
Carlos Boozer led Los Angeles with 28 points. Ed Davis had 20 rebounds in the loss and Wayne Ellington scored 19 on 5-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. Nick Young scored 16 off the bench, followed by 11 from Jeremy Lin and 10 out of Robert Sacre.
Milwaukee had three 3-pointers in the final minute of the game, with Brandon Knight's cutting the deficit to 94-91 with 31 seconds left.
After Lin missed a 3 at the other end, O.J. Mayo buried a tying 3 from the left corner with Ellington and Boozer in his face. The Lakers had just 0.5 seconds remaining and fumbled the inbounds pass as the buzzer sounded.
Knight started overtime with a 3-pointer and the Bucks never trailed after that in their fifth consecutive win.
"They hit some tough shots to take it to overtime, we can live with that," Boozer said. "In overtime they just outscored us."
The Lakers have won two straight against Orlando, but the Magic are 4-1 in their last five versus LA in Florida.
