London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after he appeared to stomp on Liverpool's Emre Can in a Capital One Cup match at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the 12th minute of the contest, which was eventually won 1-0 by Chelsea, and it was not spotted by referee Michael Oliver.
However, the FA was aware of the incident and has decided to charge Costa with violent conduct.
"Diego Costa has been charged by The FA for violent conduct following an on- field incident which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video," read an FA statement.
"The charge is in relation to an incident involving the Chelsea forward and Liverpool's Emre Can which occurred in the 12th minute of the League Cup semifinal second leg at Stamford Bridge."
Costa is facing the prospect of a three-match ban if he is found guilty, and that would rule him out of Chelsea's showdown against Manchester City on Saturday as well as fixtures against Everton and Aston Villa.
The Spain international is Chelsea's leading scorer with 17 goals in league play this season, and he has until Thursday to respond to the charge.
