Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Swiss star Stan Wawrinka was drawn Friday to open the defense of his Australian Open title against Marsel Ilhan of Turkey.

Wawrinka, who is seeded fourth, is in the top half of the draw with Serbian Novak Djokovic. The Swiss star outlasted Djokovic in a five-set quarterfinal thriller last year and stunned Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the final to capture his first-ever Grand Slam title.

The top-seeded Djokovic, who holds four Australian Open titles, will play his first match against a qualifier.

Friday's draw put Wawrinka's countryman and four-time Melbourne winner Roger Federer in the bottom half with Nadal, the 2009 Aussie Open champ.

Federer, who is seeded No. 2, will start against Chinese Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu, and Nadal, the third seed, is scheduled to face Russian Mikhail Youzhny in his first match.

Potential quarterfinal matchups are: Djokovic vs. Canadian Milos Raonic, Wawrinka vs. Japan's Kei Nishikori, Nadal vs. Czech Tomas Berdych and Federer vs. Great Britain's Andy Murray.

The Aussie Open begins on Monday.
