Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Houston Dynamo announced on Friday that the club has signed defender Raul Rodriguez from La Liga side Espanyol.

Rodriguez had his contract terminated by the Spanish outfit earlier this week after spending nearly six years with the club, and the Dynamo will hope the addition of Rodriguez can bolster a thin back line.

"He's a player at a very good stage of his career, and we feel he has a lot of very good soccer ahead of him," Dynamo general manager Matt Jordan told MLSsoccer.com.

"We think he's going to bring leadership to our team, and what's very good is that he's coming to us at a very good stage in his career with all the right motivations as to what we're working for."

The 27-year-old appeared in 80 games for Espanyol since he made his debut in 2010, and Rodriguez will be charged with improving a Dynamo defense that yielded a club-worst 58 goals last season.

Just one day earlier, Houston acquired midfielder Leonel Miranda on loan from Independiente.
