Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Red Bull New York announced on Wednesday that the club has parted ways with head coach Mike Petke after two seasons.
Last week the club replaced sporting director Andy Roxburgh with Ali Curtis, and the move to fire Petke comes as a surprise after he helped New York to its first major trophy in 2013 by guiding the side to the Supporters' Shield.
"On behalf of the New York Red Bulls, I want to thank Mike for his service to the club these past two seasons as head coach," Curtis said in a statement released by the club. "Mike will always be an important member of the Red Bull family."
Petke appeared in 169 games as a player for New York before he retired in 2010 to serve as an assistant coach to Hans Backe in 2011 and 2012.
The 38-year-old Petke took charge of the Red Bulls in January 2013 and went on to post a 30-19-19 mark in league play as well as a 2-3-2 record in the MLS Cup playoffs.
After leading New York to the Supporters' Shield in his first season in 2013, Petke helped the Red Bulls to a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference this past year, while the team advanced to the Eastern Conference final for the third time before losing 4-3 on aggregate to the New England Revolution.
