Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Columbus Crew SC announced on Monday that the club has signed midfielder Federico Higuain to a new Designated Player contract, making him the highest-paid player in club history.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the 30-year-old Higuain has certainly earned his new contract according to sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter.

"Federico has proven to be one of the top talents in Major League Soccer and a key contributor to the attacking, possession-based brand of soccer that we are trying to play at the club," Berhalter said. "This new contract demonstrates both [owner Anthony Precourt's] vision to create an attractive, winning team and Federico's commitment to play in Columbus for the foreseeable future."

The Argentine has had a huge impact on the Crew in his two-plus seasons in Columbus since arriving from Colon in 2012 as he has totaled 27 goals and 23 assists in 71 matches, including 11 goals and seven assists in 29 fixtures last term.
