Troy Brouwer scored a power-play goal with 12.9 seconds remaining Thursday, giving the Washington Capitals a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh Winter Classic.

Brouwer scored from the left circle after a marginal hooking call on Jonathan Toews. Many of the 42,832 fans at Nationals Park celebrated by flinging their seat cushions high into the air.

Eric Fehr and Alex Ovechkin also scored for the Capitals. Patrick Sharp and Brandon Saad netted goals for the Blackhawks.

The game was played under blue skies, and the NHL considered delaying the start because the brilliant sun could compromise ice conditions and player safety. It began on time, however, and the teams traded ends at the 10-minute mark of the first period to equalize the effects of the glare.
