Devils fire head coach Peter DeBoer

Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The New Jersey Devils announced they have fired head coach Peter DeBoer a day after Christmas.

DeBoer, who led the Devils to a 12-17-7 start, has been fired after his team has dropped seven of its last eight games.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello did not comment on the reasons behind the move or a possible replacement for DeBoer. In a release, the team said there would be no further comment until Lamoriello addresses the team Saturday.

New Jersey plays the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Over four seasons with New Jersey, DeBoer has compiled a 114-93-41 record and guided the team to the playoffs during the 2011 season, his first with the Devils.

DeBoer's best season in New Jersey was his first as he guided the team to a 48-28-6 record in 2011-12. The Devils represented the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals, but lost to the Los Angeles Kings in six games.

Prior joining New Jersey, DeBoer was the head coach of the Florida Panthers from 2008-11 and posted a record of 103-107-36 during his tenure in Florida.

DeBoer also coached in the Ontario Hockey League for 13 seasons with Kitchener, Plymouth and Detroit. He won a Memorial Cup title in 2003 with Kitchener.
