(SportsNetwork.com) - The prospect of being 0-2 did not appeal to conference favorites Jacksonville State and Chattanooga, and neither played as if it wanted that distinction Saturday night.
So it wasn't surprising the two ranked FCS rivals went to overtime before quarterback Eli Jenkins' 13-yard touchdown run closed out No. 9 Jacksonville State's 26-23 victory at No. 13 Chattanooga.
JSU (1-1), the favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference, won for the sixth time in the last seven meetings of a series that dates to 1904. Southern Conference favorite Chattanooga (0-2) still leads the series, 26-12.
"Tough game," Chattanooga coach Russ Huesman said. "I give Jacksonville State credit. They played hard. They got after us, especially defensively. They were well-coached and did a fantastic job. I don't want to say they deserved to win the game, but they won it fair and square. It was a tough loss. We have to regroup and get ready for Austin Peay."
Jenkins passed for 122 yards and rushed for 82 in the win. DaMarcus James rushed for 112 yards and one touchdown on 29 carries.
The Gamecocks limited Chattanooga to 111 yards. Dee Virgin and Lucas Webb both scored on interception returns for the Mocs.
Hamish MacInnes' third field goal - from 29 yards - had given the Mocs a 23-20 lead on the first possession of overtime.
