Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to Shane Vereen as the New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers, 30-7, in preseason action.
Brady completed 17-of-21 passes for 204 yards while playing into the third quarter. He connected with Vereen for scores of 40 and six yards.
Second-round draft pick Jimmy Garoppolo, who is competing with Ryan Mallett for the backup quarterback job, hooked up with Taylor McCuller for an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Stephen Gostkowski made three field goals, including a 60-yarder in the waning seconds of the first half.
Carolina quarterback Cam Newton remained in the game until the third quarter and finished 8-of-12 for 88 yards.
Joe Webb spoiled New England's shutout bid with a late TD pass.
