Flushing Meadows, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - World No. 1 Serena Williams could face former top-ranked star Maria Sharapova in the final at the 2014 U.S. Open, as the draw was revealed Thursday in New York.

The five-time champion Williams will open against promising fellow American Taylor Townsend and could face 24th-seeded Samantha Stosur in the fourth round in a rematch of the 2011 U.S. Open final, which was stunningly won by the Aussie.

A potential quarterfinal opponent for Williams could be eighth-seeded former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, while a semifinal outing for the American could feature third-seeded Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova, seventh-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard or 16th-seeded Victoria Azarenka on the other side of the net. Kvitova will open against France's Kristina Mladenovic, while Bouchard will battle Belarusian Olga Govortsova and the two-time Australian Open champion Azarenka will tangle with Japan's Misaki Doi in the round of 128.

Williams, who has appeared in three straight U.S. Open finals, beat the former top-ranked Azarenka in the last two finals in Flushing, both in three sets.

The two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova could meet 27th-seeded rising American Madison Keys in the third round, Azarenka in the fourth, and Bouchard in the quarters. Bouchard is the only woman to reach at least the semifinals in the first three Grand Slam events this year.

The bottom half of the draw is highlighted by second-seeded French Open runner-up Simona Halep and the fifth-seeded Sharapova, who was this year's French Open champ and captured her lone U.S. Open title back in 2006.

Halep will open up against little-known American Danielle Rose Collins, while the five-time major champion Sharapova will face fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko in round one.

Halep and Sharapova could meet in the semifinals in a rematch of their Roland Garros final, which was won by the Russian veteran. Halep could meet two-time U.S. Open champ Venus Williams in the fourth round, while Sharapova could face former world No. 1 and 2009 U.S. Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth. Sharapova could meet Halep or Venus in the quarterfinals, and Halep or Sharapova could face fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semis. Halep, like Sharapova, could face Serena in the final.

A potential quarterfinal opponent for Radwanska could be sixth seed Angelique Kerber, who could meet American Sloane Stephens in the fourth round.

The 2014 U.S. Open will begin Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
