Djokovic could meet Federer in U.S. Open final

Flushing Meadows, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The draw was revealed Thursday for the U.S. Open and top seeds Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer could meet in the final in two weeks.

The world No. 1 Djokovic will open up against Argentine Diego Schwartzman and could face 13th-seeded 6-foot-10 American John Isner in the fourth round. The Serbian star could meet eighth-seeded Andy Murray in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the 2012 U.S. Open final, which was won by Murray.

The two-time Grand Slam champion Murray, who was also a U.S. Open runner-up back in 2008, will open against Dutchman Robin Haase next week.

Potential semifinal opponents for Djokovic could be third-seeded Australian Open champ Stan Wawrinka or fifth-seeded Canadian star Milos Raonic. Wawrinka will open against Czech Jiri Vesely, while Raonic will face a qualifier in the round of 128.

The five-time champion and former runner-up Federer could then loom for the 2011 titlist and four-time runner-up Djokovic in the title match.

Djokovic is the reigning Wimbledon champ and French Open runner-up who was last year's U.S. Open runner-up to Rafael Nadal and has appeared in the last four U.S. Open finals.

The 2013 champion and two-time titlist Nadal pulled out of the Open this week due to a right wrist injury.

In the bottom half of the draw, the 17-time Grand Slam king Federer will be the favorite to come out. The Swiss icon will open up against Aussie Marinko Matosevic and could face seventh-seeded Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov in the quarters. Dimitrov will open against American Ryan Harrison.

Potential semifinal opponents for the Wimbledon runner-up Federer or Dimitrov could be sixth-seeded former Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych or fourth- seeded former Roland Garros finalist David Ferrer. Berdych will open against former U.S. Open champ Lleyton Hewitt, while Ferrer will take on Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in round one.

The 33-year-old Federer beat Ferrer in last week's Cincinnati Masters final.

The 2014 U.S. Open will get underway Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
