Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward William Nylander, the eighth overall pick in the 2014 NHL entry draft, to a three-year, entry-level contract on Monday.

The 18-year-old tallied one goal and six assists in 22 games with MODO of the Swedish Hockey League last season. He also registered four goals and eight points in 18 games for Rogle and 11 goals and eight assists in 17 games for Sodertalje in Sweden's second division.

"Not only does William Nylander bring a high level of speed and skill to his game but he has a very strong character on and off the ice," Maple Leafs general manager David Nonis said. "We believe he has a very bright future and are happy to have him signed to his first NHL contract."

Nylander led Sweden to a fourth-place finish at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship in Finland and earned best forward honors for leading all players in assists (10) and points (16).
