White Sox activate OF Garcia from DL

Chicago, IL ( - The Chicago White Sox reinstated outfielder Avisail Garcia from the 60-day disabled list among a flurry of roster moves made by the team prior to Saturday's game against Toronto.

Garcia, back from shoulder surgery in April that was initially expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season, will play right field and bat cleanup in Saturday's matchup with the Blue Jays.

The 23-year-old, acquired by the White Sox as part of last summer's three-team trade that sent pitcher Jake Peavy from Chicago to Boston, sustained a torn labrum and avulsion fracture in his left shoulder while attempting to make a diving catch at Colorado on April 9.

Garcia proved his health by hitting .340 (17-of-40) with one home run, three doubles and three RBI in 13 games on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte.

The White Sox also placed outfielder Moises Sierra on the 15-day DL due to a strained left oblique.

Since being claimed off waivers from Toronto on May 3, Sierra has batted .289 with two homers and seven RBI over 71 games with the White Sox.

Additionally, reliever Javy Guerra was placed on the bereavement list and left-hander Eric Surkamp was recalled from Charlotte to take his place.

Surkamp had just been optioned to Charlotte on Monday. He pitched in 20 games for Chicago prior to being sent down, allowing 10 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings.

To make room for Garcia on the 40-man roster, pitcher Charlie Leesman was designated for assignment.
