Langer comes from behind to win in New York

Endicott, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Bernhard Langer carded a 6-under 66 on Sunday to come from behind and win the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

Langer collected his fifth win of the season and 23rd overall victory on the Champions Tour at 16-under-par 200.

"I feel this year I'm putting a little bit better. I make a lot of putts, pressure putts and even some longer putts and it shows up in the scores," Langer said about his success this season. "I've shot some very low scores and consistently break par on a regular basis. The swing is pretty consistent, too, but the score's all in the putter."

Woody Austin (65) and Mark O'Meara (66) shared second place at En-Joie Golf Course at 15-under, while Marco Dawson (66), Olin Browne (69) and Steve Lowery (72) tied for fourth at minus-13.

Second-round leader Kevin Sutherland, who recorded the first 59 in Champions Tour history on Saturday, tripped to a 2-over 74 during his final round to fall into a tie for seventh with Dick Mast (69), Billy Andrade (69), John Riegger (70) and John Cook (72) at 12-under 204.

"I wasn't playing very well and I made some mistakes," Sutherland said about his final round. "I wasn't playing nearly as well as I did yesterday obviously and just couldn't make it up."

Sutherland entered the final round with a 1-stroke lead, but quickly gave that shot away with a bogey at the second to fall into a tie with Lowery at 13- under.

Sutherland and Lowery both bogeyed the fourth to fall to minus-12 and into a tie for the lead with Austin, Browne and Langer.

Sutherland later dropped shots at the eighth and 10th to fall off the pace.

Austin and Langer then broke from the pack as Austin converted his fifth birdie of the day at the ninth, while Langer poured in his third straight birdie at the fifth to both move to 13-under.

Mast made it a three-way tie at 13-under with a birdie at the eighth before Lowery converted back-to-back gains at the seventh and eighth to claim the outright lead at minus-14.

Langer answered with a birdie at the ninth, but Lowery moved back ahead with his third straight birdie at the ninth.

Langer again responded with a birdie at the 10th to reclaim the lead, and then countered Lowery's birdie at the 11th with a gain at the 14th to place the duo tied at minus-16.

Lowery followed in the final group and found the water at the par-3 14th, resulting in a double-bogey to leave Langer alone in the lead. Lowery dropped another shot with a bogey at the 15th to fall three shots off the pace.

No one was able to catch Langer from there and he parred his final four holes to claim the title.

"I just tried to keep my head down and hit quality shots and keep the pressure on and post a good score and force the others to take chances that are behind me," said Langer. "In the end I finally looked up at the leaderboard and I saw, I think it was on the 16th green, that I had a 1-shot lead and the person that was one behind was already finished and had a 2-shot or 3-shot lead over the guys behind me, which basically told me if I could par in from that point on, I should win the tournament unless something crazy happens."

Austin had countered a lone bogey with eight birdies earlier in the day to finish at 15-under.

NOTES: Langer collected $277,500 with the win and has now surpassed $2.6 million in earnings this season. That is the most money earned in a year by a player since Hale Irwin earned a record $3,028,304 in 2002 ... Langer also won five times in the 2010 season ... Langer has played his last 93 holes at this tournament without a bogey. He has not recorded a bogey in 65 consecutive holes overall.
