Manchester, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Manchester City announced Wednesday that defender Vincent Kompany has signed a five-year extension to keep the Belgium international at the Etihad until 2019.

The 28-year-old joined the Citizens in 2008 from Hamburg and has been a central figure for the English club, logging more than 240 appearances in all competitions over the last six seasons.

Since being named the club's captain ahead of the 2011-12 season, Kompany has guided City to two Premier League titles and an FA Community Shield.

Kompany's extension is the latest in a string of new deals that has seen Aleksander Kolarov, Samir Nasri and David Silva commit their respective futures to City as the reigning Premier League champions look to solidify their strong nucleus for the coming years.
