Pacers expect Paul George to make full recovery but plan to contend without him next season

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers expect Paul George to make a full recovery from his gruesome injury — they're just not planning on having him in the lineup next season.

Eleven days after George sustained a compound fracture in his right leg during a USA Basketball scrimmage, president of basketball operations Larry Bird and coach Frank Vogel spoke for the first time about their star's prognosis. They said team doctors believe George eventually can be his old self on the court.

George underwent surgery and is recovering at his suburban Indianapolis home. Vogel says George is wearing a splint and using crutches. He cannot drive.

Bird says Indiana has asked the league for a roster adjustment, but the NBA has not yet granted the provision known as the "disabled player exception."
