The final round of the PGA Championship has been halted because of heavy rain.

Play was suspended at 12:53 p.m. EDT Sunday, with leader Rory McIlroy still more than two hours from teeing off. Workers brought out squeegees, trying furiously to push standing water off the course, to no avail.

The second suspension of the tournament — play also was halted for less than an hour Friday morning — raised the possibility that the final major of the year could carry into Monday.

If there's a tie at the end of 72 holes, a three-hole playoff would be required.

McIlroy went into the final round leading by one stroke over Bernd Wiesberger. Rickie Fowler was two shots back, while Phil Mickelson and Jason Day faced a three-stroke deficit.
