NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Devonte Fields won't play at Stephen F. Austin after all.
A day after saying the standout defensive end would be joining the Lumberjacks, the school said Friday that Fields decided not to enroll at SFA because of a suspension from TCU that would also make him ineligible to play this season at the FCS school.
Fields was suspended by TCU last month after he surrendered to authorities on a misdemeanor assault warrant, stemming from allegations he threatened his ex-girlfriend and punched her.
The SFA statement said that after originally agreeing to grant a release to Fields, TCU "has since convened a committee and declared that Fields' violations of the student honor code has warranted his suspension from the school."
TCU officials said Fields' status was unchanged Friday.
