Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have avoided arbitration with Nick Spaling, agreeing to terms Thursday with the restricted free agent forward on a two-year contract.

The deal has an average annual value of $2.2 million.

Spaling was acquired by the Penguins from the Nashville Predators along with Patric Hornqvist on June 28 in exchange for James Neal.

The 25-year-old Spaling played in 71 games last season and set career highs in goals (13), assists (19) and points (32).

A 2007 second-round pick of the Predators, Spaling has 40 goals and 84 points in 297 career games.
