Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell says he took players out to dinner during the offseason to serve them better as their leader.

Caldwell believes coaching is a service business.

Jim Schwartz never seemed to say anything like that during his five years with the Lions.

Caldwell has had a calming presence on his new team and at least a couple players say his approach is a refreshing change.

Schwartz was emotionally charged on the sideline — and infamously on the field during one postgame exchange with San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh — and his ways appeared to wear on executives and players.

He was fired following last season's flop and Caldwell was given a second chance to lead an NFL team.
