Gstaad, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) - Spain's Pablo Andujar captured his third ATP title with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Juan Monaco of Argentina at the Swiss Open Sunday.
Ranked 71st in the world, the 28-year-old Andujar improved to 3-3 in career finals by winning this clay-court event. His other championships came in Casablanca in 2011 and 2012.
"I knew it was going to be a fight, physically. The first set was decided on two points," Andujar said. "He got the advantage in the second set, but I played aggressively in the important and final points. I have worked a lot and it is amazing to win a trophy. I finished with an ace, the only ace I hit the whole match."
Spaniards have won the Gstaad crown 13 times since 1990.
The 30-year-old Monaco was playing in his first final since losing at Kitzbuhel in July last year. He has won seven of his eight career titles on clay. Monaco dropped to an 8-11 record in championship matches.
"I would like to congratulate Pablo. I think he had an amazing run this week," Monaco said. "He won a couple of good matches and played well to win today."
