Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox shipped veteran Jake Peavy to the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.
The Giants hope the move bolsters their rotation as they are locked in a tight battle with the Los Angeles Dodgers for NL West supremacy.
Boston acquired two minor league pitchers, Edwin Escobar and Heath Hembree, in exchange for the 33-year-old Peavy and cash considerations. Escobar and Hembree were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
A former National League Cy Young Award winner, Peavy was 1-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 20 outings for the Red Sox this season. The right-hander's run support average of 2.76 was the second-lowest among all AL starting pitchers.
