Chivas humbled in loss at DCU

Washington, D.C. ( - Chivas USA's encouraging run of form came to an abrupt end on Sunday as the club suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat to D.C. United at RFK Stadium.

The Goats entered the match on a four-game winning streak, but a first-half penalty from Eddie Johnson and second-half goals from Perry Kitchen and Luis Silva saw D.C. United squash any hopes of Chivas grabbing a fifth straight league win.

D.C. (10-5-4) collects its third successive victory to improve to 34 points on the season and stay within touching distance of first-place Sporting Kansas City.

Chivas (6-8-5) stays on 23 points to remain four points adrift of fifth place in the hunt for a playoff spot.

The deadlock in Sunday's affair was broken in the 25th minute following Oswaldo Minda's needless challenge in the box that knocked Chris Rolfe to the ground. A penalty was awarded to the home side and Johnson fired home the attempt for his third goal of the season.

United could have added to its lead before the close of the first half when Johnson got on the end of Chris Korb's cross in the 42nd minute but only managed to turn his header onto the crossbar.

Dan Kennedy then came up big in the 45th minute when he parried away a shot by Rolfe that looked destined for the bottom corner, helping the Goats make it to the interval with only a one-goal deficit.

But the second half belonged to the hosts as United scored twice in the span of 11 minutes to ensure all three points.

D.C. doubled its advantage just before the hour mark when Rolfe's free kick into the box was headed back by Johnson to allow Kitchen to fire home with a first-time effort.

Silva made sure of the victory in the 70th minute when he beat the offside trap to latch onto Korb's through ball and slip a shot past the on-rushing Kennedy from the left side of the box.

Chivas managed to tack on a consolation goal in the 84th minute when Steve Birnbaum committed a foul on Mauro Rosales in the penalty area, which allowed Erick Torres to slot home his 14th tally of the season, but it did not sway the result as D.C. United closed out the match to collect all three points.
