San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was sentenced to 11 days in jail and three years' probation on weapons and DUI charges but can serve his jail term on a work crew.
Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Daniel Nishigaya also ordered Smith to pay $2,000 in fines, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Nishigaya on Friday reduced three felony counts of possessing illegal assault rifles against Smith to misdemeanors.
Under the terms of his probation, Smith, 24, is barred from drinking alcohol or possessing guns or ammunition for three years. Violating the terms would result in an 11-day jail sentence.
Smith can complete his 11-day stint on a work crew on consecutive Mondays starting July 28, according to the Mercury News.
The talented but troubled linebacker, who has had numerous run-ins with the law, pleaded no contest in May to the weapons and DUI charges. He was facing up to four years and four months in prison.
Smith took a leave of absence from the 49ers last year to seek help for a substance abuse problem. He has been one of the NFL's elite pass rushers since being drafted No. 7 overall by the 49ers in 2011.
In May, the 49ers exercised the fifth-year option on Smith's contract.
