Irving, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Cowboys released quarterback Kyle Orton on Wednesday.
Last month, Orton was a no-show at Cowboys minicamp and was facing a fine of around $70,000 amid speculation that he might want a pay raise due to Tony Romo's injury-prone history or might even retire.
He was owed $3.25 million for the 2014 season, the final year of his contract.
Orton, 31, started in place of Romo in the Cowboys' winner-take-all NFC East loss to Philadelphia in Week 17 last season after Romo had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back.
In 75 regular-season games with Chicago, Denver, Kansas City and Dallas, Orton has compiled a record of 35-35 with 83 touchdown passes and 59 interceptions.
