Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Reds placed second baseman Brandon Phillips on the 15-day disabled list Friday due to a torn ligament in his left thumb.
The team said Phillips underwent surgery Friday and will be sidelined for approximately six weeks.
Phillips suffered the injury during Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs while making a diving play on an Anthony Rizzo grounder.
The 33-year-old is hitting .272 with seven homers and 40 RBI so far this season.
In other moves on Friday, the Reds optioned catcher Tucker Barnhart to Triple- A Louisville, while recalling pitchers Carlos Contreras and Curtis Patch from Louisville.
