Bastad, Sweden (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning champion Carlos Berlocq upset top-seeded two-time titlist David Ferrer in Friday's quarterfinal action at the Swedish Open tennis event.

The seventh-seeded Argentine Berlocq continued his winning ways in Sweden with a 6-3, 6-3 ousting of the gritty Spaniard Ferrer in 85 minutes on Day 5. Berlocq broke Ferrer five times en route to the upset.

Ferrer titled here in 2007 and 2012 and was the runner-up in 2011.

Berlocq, who upset Spain's Fernando Verdasco in last year's Bastad finale, will meet fifth-seeded Portuguese Joao Sousa in Saturday's semifinals.

A third-seeded Verdasco moved on by handling eighth-seeded fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 7-5, 6-3 on the red clay at Bastad Tennis Stadium.

Verdasco's semifinal opponent will be Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.

Friday's other quarterfinal results saw Sousa subdue Serb Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-4 and the 111th-rankeed Cuevas cruise past Argentine qualifier Renzo Olivo 6-2, 6-4.

The 2014 Bastad titlist will collect $105,000.
