Meanwhile, second-seeded Italian veteran Roberta Vinci came from behind to best Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Vinci's next opponent will be seventh-seeded Czech Petra Cetkovska.

Also on Day 4, Montenegro's Danka Kovinic tackled fourth-seeded Italian Karin Knapp 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and Cetkovska edged out Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Friday's other quarters will pit eighth-seeded Slovenian Polona Hercog against Romanian veteran Monica Niculescu and Slovak Kristina Kucova versus Kovinic.

The maiden Bucharest champion will pocket $43,000.
