Canadiens sign defenseman Andrei Markov to three-year, $17.25 million deal

The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenseman Andrei Markov to a $17.25 million, three-year deal.

Markov will count $5.75 million against the salary cap, just as he did in his two previous contracts.

The 35-year-old Russian played 81 regular-season games in 2013-14. Markov had seven goals and 36 assists this past season and a goal and nine assists in 17 playoff games.

He has 442 points (98 goals, 344 assists) in 765 career regular-season games, all with the Canadiens.

In addition to re-signing Markov, the Canadiens also will try to sign star defenseman P.K. Subban, who is a restricted free agent.
