Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Campbell's infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning sent the Vanderbilt Commodores to their first ever College World Series finals, edging the Texas Longhorns 4-3 on Saturday.
After Texas reliever John Curtiss recorded the first two outs in the 10th, Rhett Wiseman laced a single to center to extend the inning. Ro Coleman then walked and Karl Ellison was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Campbell, who was starting for the ineligible Xavier Turner and 0-for-4 prior to his game- winner. He grounded a 1-1 fastball weakly to shortstop but had the speed to beat out C.J. Hinojosa's throw to first, allowing Wiseman to score the winning run.
Hayden Stone struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings of relief for Vandy, yielding a run on three hits to pick up the win.
Wiseman and John Norwood each had a pair of hits and an RBI in the triumph.
Freshmen Kacy Clemens and Zane Gurwitz -- Texas' No. 8 and 9 hole hitters -- provided all three Longhorns runs. Clemens had a two-run single in the fourth inning and Gurwitz an RBI single in the sixth.
The Commodores, who have never been in the CWS finals, will take on the Virginia Cavaliers in the best-of-three championship series. Virginia upended Ole Miss earlier in the day, 4-1, also reaching the finals for the first time.
Robbie Coman and Brandon Downes each finished 2-for-4 for Virginia, with Coman driving in a pair of runs. Three UVA pitchers combined on a six-hitter, with Josh Sborz starting and allowing just an unearned run over five innings of work to get the win.
Chris Ellis allowed three runs out of Mississippi's bullpen to absorb the loss.
The CWS finals kick off Monday night.
