Halle, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Seeded players Richard Gasquet and last year's runner-up Mikhail Youzhny came up opening-round losers Tuesday at the grass-court Gerry Weber Open.
Dutchman Robin Haase took out the fifth-seeded French star Gasquet 6-4, 6-4, while 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic fired 22 aces in bouncing the sixth-seeded Youzhny 6-3, 6-4 at Gerry Weber Stadium.
Youzhny was last year's runner-up to six-time Halle champion Roger Federer.
Former top-10 star Gael Monfils advanced by beating German favorite Benjamin Becker, 6-1, 7-5. on Day 2.
Also on Tuesday, Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu outlasted Croatian qualifier Mate Pavic 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (11-13), 7-6 (7-5); Colombian Alejandro Falla beat Pole Lukasz Kubot 6-2, 3-6, 6-3; American Steve Johnson doused Frenchman Albano Olivetti 6-4, 6-2; and Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili snuck past Ukrainian qualifier Illya Marchenko 6-7 (9-11), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
In some second-round action on Wednesday, third-seeded Canadian slugger Milos Raonic will take on German wild card Peter Gojowczyk and fourth-seeded Japanese Kei Nishikori will battle Monfils.
Halle serves a tune-up for Wimbledon, which will commence June 23 at the All England Club.
