Report: Devils G Martin Brodeur expects to enter free agency

Over the course of his 21 NHL season with the New Jersey Devils, Martin Brodeur has won three Stanley Cups and broken league records for wins by a goaltender and shutouts.

But according to a report from ESPN, the veteran netminder said Friday that he expects to enter free agency come the first of the month.

"I've come to the conclusion that I'm definitely going to be available July 1,'' Brodeur told ESPN. "I want to play one more season and I want to see what's out there."

Brodeur, who has collected 688 wins and 124 shutouts with the franchise, played 39 games last seaosn as Cory Schneider carried the majority of the load in his first year with the team. At 28, Schneider looks to be the Devils' goalie of the future, a point not lost on Brodeur.

"I've had a lot of good conversations with the Devils, but I'm not inclined at going back at this point," Brodeur told ESPN. "I just feel that with 'Schneids' the organization has to move on. Me being around might be tough a little bit for them. I don't completely put it out of the question (returning to New Jersey), but I don't want to mess up the cards for the Devils.

"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where I go next, I'm always going to be a Devil. I'm always going to come back to the organization. But I want to play one more year. So I'll see what's out there."

The second half of the statement above should offer some solice to New Jersey fans. Brodeur was showered with chants of "Marty!" on the Devils final game of the 2013-14 season vs. Boston on April 13. Fittingly, Brodeur recorded a win in the game.

If the Devils do allow Brodeur to walk, the next logical question would be where the 42-year-old netminder goes.

Brodeur: "I've got to see what the opportunities are. I'm not going to go somewhere where I don't feel comfortable. If I go somewhere as a No. 2 goalie, it's going to be a team that has a really good chance to win a Stanley Cup. If I go for a No. 1 job, it's going to depend on the situation. I think there are teams that can use me."
