Corvallis, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Grant Palmer broke a tie game with a bases-loaded single in the sixth and UC Irvine knocked off No. 1 national seed Oregon State with a 4-2 victory Monday to claim the Corvallis Regional.
Jeff Hendrix scored Logan Ice with a fielder's choice groundout in the third to put the Beavers on top, but Ryan Cooper plated Kris Paulino with a groundout in the fifth to tie the game.
Palmer then ripped a single through the left side with the bases loaded in the sixth before Oregon State reliever Brandon Jackson plunked Adam Alcantara with two outs and the bases loaded to force in a run for a 3-1 UC Irvine lead.
The Anteaters added an insurance run in the seventh on Jonathan Munoz's RBI groundout, but Oregon State sliced the margin to two in the eighth when Nick Rulli tripled and scored on Mitch Merten's wild pitch.
In the ninth, Kavin Keyes smacked a leadoff single and Ice worked a two-out walk, but Elliot Surrey got Caleb Hamilton to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to send the Anteaters to the Super Regional, where they will meet Oklahoma State.
Evan Manarino notched the victory after allowing a run on two hits over 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Andrew Morales, who surrendered one run on three hits with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 frames.
Starter Jake Thompson absorbed the loss for Oregon State, which became the first No. 1 national seed to lose before the Super Regional since Vanderbilt in 2007.
