Dover, DE (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Busch's hopes of winning all three of NASCAR's national touring series races at Dover International Speedway this weekend came to an abrupt end due to an accident in the early going of Sunday's 400-mile Sprint Cup Series race.
On lap 125, Clint Bowyer bumped into Busch while the two were battling for position. Busch then slammed into the wall, causing damage to the right-front of his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Both drivers were running in the top- five at the time of the incident.
During the caution, Busch chased down Bowyer in what appeared to be some sort of retaliation, but Busch's crew chief, Dave Rogers, instructed him over his team radio to back away from Bowyer. Busch then headed to the garage. He did not comment on the incident, as he quickly walked to his hauler.
Busch started second but pulled ahead of pole sitter Brad Keselowski on the opening lap and then led the first 81 laps around this one-mile, concrete- surfaced track before Jimmie Johnson moved to the front.
After leading the 28th lap, Busch became the 15th driver in the history of NASCAR's premier series with 10,000 career laps led.
Busch won the 200-mile Camping World Truck Series race at Dover on Friday and scored the victory in the 200-mile Nationwide Series event here on Saturday. Had Busch taken the checkered flag for the Sprint Cup race, it would have been the second time in his career that he won all three NASCAR events at a track on the same week. He became the first driver in the history of the sport to accomplish that feat in August 2010 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
