Cabrera's HR in ninth lifts Tigers over O's

Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez both homered in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers came from behind to defeat the Baltimore Orioles, 4-1, in the middle contest of a three-game set.

Tommy Hunter (1-1) took the mound in the ninth for the Orioles and was greeted with a leadoff single from Alex Avila. Rajai Davis came in to pinch-run and stole second.

After getting two outs, Hunter walked Torii Hunter before serving up a fastball that Cabrera crushed into the bullpen beyond the wall in left-center. Martinez came up next and stroked a solo shot to make it a 4-1 game.

Cabrera and Martinez both had two hits for the Tigers, who have won three of their last four.

Justin Miller (1-0) earned the win after allowing just one hit in two innings in relief of starter Drew Smyly, who conceded one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over six frames.

Adam Jones had two hits and a homer for Baltimore, which has dropped three straight. Starter Ubaldo Jimenez spun seven scoreless innings, giving up just three hits to go with seven strikeouts.

Jones stroked a two-out line drive shot that escaped just over the left-field wall to give the O's an early 1-0 lead in the first.

The Orioles loaded the bases in the third. Manny Machado and Jones both hit one-out singles and two batters later, Nelson Cruz walked. J.J. Hardy flied out to Austin Jackson in center, who made a running catch to keep it a one-run game and end the threat.

Detroit threatened in the seventh. Hunter singled to center and Cabrera took a walk. Hunter tried to advance to third after Jimenez threw a ball in the dirt, but catcher Caleb Joseph threw a laser to third to record the out. Martinez hit into a double play to end the frame.

Joe Nathan entered the game to pitch the ninth. After giving up a one-out single to Steve Pearce, Nathan got Jonathan Schoop to ground into a double play to end the game and earn his ninth save of the season.

Game Notes

The Tigers lead the season series, 4-1 ... Jones extended his hitting streak to eight games ... Baltimore went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
