Roger Penske's team made a slow Sunday at Indianapolis look as easy as one, two, three.
Will Power, Juan Pablo Montoya and Helio Castroneves swept the top of the speed chart on the first day of Indianapolis 500 practice. Power, an Australian, posted a fast lap of 223.057 mph. Montoya, the 2000 Indy winner from Colombia, was second at 222.502. Castroneves, a three-time Indy winner from Brazil, was third at 222.373.
It was a strange opening day at the track.
Only two dozen made cars made it onto the track, including Kurt Busch who was 12th at 220.352. Most were trying to convert their cars from road-course racing to oval racing literally overnight.
And only a smattering of fans showed up the day after the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
