Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were both held to draws that ensure they will play each other in a direct Spanish league title decider next weekend, while Manchester City won the Premier League for the second time in three seasons on Sunday.

Newly crowned Italian champion Juventus beat Roma 1-0 in Serie A and Paderborn won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time by beating Aalen 2-1.

Here is a look at Sunday's action in European leagues:

SPAIN

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona will play a winner-takes-all decider for the Spanish league title after both teams drew, while Real Madrid lost to see its slim title hopes end.

Little-used defender Tobias Alderweireld headed home a corner kick for Atletico in the 74th minute to cancel out Samuel Garcia's opener.

Though Malaga finished with 10 men, Atletico failed to score a winner that would have secured a first league title in 18 years after Elche held Barcelona 0-0. Instead, Atletico travels to the Camp Nou next weekend in the final round needing just a draw to clinch the title. Barcelona would defend its crown with a win.

Madrid limped out of the league race with a poor showing in Vigo, where a pair of turnovers allowed Charles to score both goals in a 2-0 win.

ENGLAND

Unlike the final day of the 2012 season, City didn't need any stoppage time goals to clinch the title this time — just a comfortable 2-0 victory over West Ham courtesy of goals either side of halftime by Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany.

Liverpool came from behind to beat nine-man Newcastle United 2-1 but the win was not enough for the Reds to claim a first league title since 1990.

On a final day lacking drama, the only other matter to settle was sixth place, with Tottenham denying deposed champion Manchester United the final Europa League spot by beating Aston Villa 3-0.

As soon as the final whistle was blown, thousands of Manchester City fans flooded onto the Etihad Stadium pitch, setting off blue flares. For a club that has spent so much time in the shadow of United — last year's champion — it was just the fourth time in its 134-year history that fans could celebrate a league title.

ITALY

A late goal got newly crowned champion Juventus past Roma 1-0 in Serie A to set a new points record for the Italian league.

Pablo Osvaldo's stoppage-time winner ensured Juventus moved to 99 points, bettering Inter Milan's record.

Antonio Conte's team can become the first club in any of the top European leagues to reach the 100-point mark when it plays Cagliari at Juventus Stadium, where it has won all 17 of its matches this season.

Earlier, Torino was held 1-1 by Parma. Europa League qualification will now be decided on the final day of the season.

Torino remained sixth, a point above Parma and two above Hellas Verona and AC Milan, which lost 2-1 at Atalanta in a match blighted by racism.

Catania beat Bologna 2-1, but both sides were relegated.

GERMANY

Paderborn won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time by beating Aalen 2-1, while Greuther Fuerth will play Hamburger SV in a playoff for a place in the top tier.

Greuther Fuerth was relegated from the Bundesliga at the end of last season but now has a chance to return if it prevails over two legs against Hamburg, which finished third from bottom in the Bundesliga. Greuther Fuerth won 2-0 against Sandhausen on the final day of the season to finish third in the second division.

Nuremberg and Eintracht Braunschweig were relegated from the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Cologne, already assured of finishing top of the second division, lost 2-0 at FSV Frankfurt.
