Manuel Pellegrini's team had to wait more than 60 minutes to finally breach the Villa defense, but it was Dzeko who found the net as he turned a low cross from Pablo Zabaleta past goalkeeper Brad Guzan from six yards.
The hosts doubled their lead eight minutes later when Guzan parried a shot from Samir Nasri that ended up on the foot of Dzeko, who rolled home his fourth goal in the past two games from close range.
