Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Patriots have signed veteran defensive end Will Smith to an undisclosed contract, the team announced Monday.
Smith comes to New England following a 10-year stint with the New Orleans Saints, who selected the 32-year-old in the first round of the 2004 draft. He was released by the Saints in February.
A key contributor to New Orleans' Super Bowl XLIV championship squad in 2009, Smith amassed 67 1/2 sacks over 139 games with the Saints and twice reached double-digits in that category during his tenure with the team. He missed the entire 2013 campaign, however, after tearing his ACL during training camp.
Smith was named to the Pro Bowl after accumulating 10 1/2 sacks in 2006 and recorded a career-best 13 along with three forced fumbles during New Orleans' 2009 Super Bowl run.
