Frankfurt, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Sweden's Carin Koch was selected as the European Solheim Cup captain on Friday. The Ladies European Tour made the announcement at the site of the 2015 matches, St. Leon-Rot Golf Club.
Koch played in just four Solheim Cups, but tallied an impressive 10-3-3 record, and also holed the winning putt at Loch Lomond in 2000. Most recently, she was a vice captain for the winning 2011 and 2013 European teams.
"I am extremely delighted and honored to captain the 2015 Solheim Cup team. Being vice-captain to Liselotte Neumann in 2013, I once again experienced the thrill of the Solheim Cup matches, which are unlike any other tournament in professional golf," Koch said. "I cannot wait to stand with the team on the first tee next September to start our quest for the hat trick of wins against the U.S. team. I look forward to working with the German team at Golf Club St.Leon-Rot for the next year and a half to put on the best Solheim Cup ever."
Koch earned 11 1/2 points in playing on four straight teams from 2000-05. Those European teams went 2-2. She also captained the Junior Solheim Cup team in 2009.
"I'm very pleased Carin Koch has been chosen as captain of the 2015 European Solheim Cup team," said John Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. "She's been a standout on four Solheim Cup teams, while compiling a 10-3-3 record. I'll always remember her jubilant reaction after making the Cup-clinching putt at Loch Lomond in 2000. It captured the spirit of what the event is all about. She'll be a tremendous leader as the European team seeks its third straight Solheim Cup victory."
Despite her record at the Solheim Cup, Koch owns just four international victories, two of which came on the LPGA Tour.
The European team's win last year in Colorado was its first victory in the United States, and also marked its second straight Solheim Cup win. It was the first time the European team had won two straight cups.
Koch immediately named World Golf Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam as one of her vice captains. Over two Solheim Cups, Koch and Sorenstam teamed to go 3-0 in foursomes play and 0-1 in four-ball play.
The 2015 Solheim Cup will take place September 18-20 at St. Leon-Rot Golf Club in Germany. Juli Inkster was tabbed as the United States captain on March 19.
