New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle Sounders FC striker Clint Dempsey was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 5 of the 2014 MLS season.
Dempsey led the Sounders to a thrilling 4-4 draw against rival Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Saturday, scoring a hat trick that included the tying goal.
The United States international scored his first goal of the day in the 24th minute, taking a pass from Obafemi Martins right outside of the box and sending a low shot to the bottom corner of the net.
Seattle was trailing by two goals with five minutes to play, but Dempsey rescued a point for the visitors with two goals in quick succession.
Dempsey got the Sounders to within one in the 85th minute by getting on the end of Lamar Neagle's cross and firing a shot past Andrew Weber with a scrappy finish.
Less than two minutes later, Dempsey completed his hat trick and tied the game by converting a penalty kick after Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin was taken down by Portland midfielder Ben Zemanski inside the box.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North America Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
